FORMER House of Cards star Kevin Spacey has been charged with four counts of sexual assault after a series of complaints were made between 2005 and 2013.

It is the first criminal case brought against the 62-year-old two-time Oscar-winner since 2019 when a string of other allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced.

What are the allegations against Kevin Spacey?

In the case against Kevin Spacey, one man claims he was sexually assaulted in 2005, two others made claims of sexual assault in 2008, and an additional incident in Gloucestershire, western England, in 2013.

The men accused Spacey of one count of “penetrative sexual activity without consent and four counts of sexual assault against four men,” according to Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

CPS has reportedly spent a year reviewing evidence contained in a file passed to them by the Metropolitan Police and they claim to have found substantial evidence to charge Spacey.

The allegation first arose in 2017 by Broadway actor Anthony Rapp, best known for his role as Mark in Rent. Rapp claimed Spacey made a sexual advance toward him in 1986 when he was 14 years old.

Rapp stated on Twitter in 2017 that he was motivated to come forward after dozens of women made allegations against Harvey Weinstein. In his tweet, Rapp wrote that he was “standing on the shoulders of the many courageous women and men who have been speaking out to shine a light and hopefully make a difference.”

Vox reported in 2018 that more than 30 people had come forward with allegations against the House of Cards actor.

What is Kevin Spacey charged with?

Spacey was charged with four counts of sexual assault and one count of “causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent.”

Spacey has denied the allegations against him and the final US criminal case was closed in July 2019. However, in April 2021, the UK made the decision to conduct their own investigation into the allegations made against Spacey after they received a file containing what they say was evidence against him.

“The CPS has authorized criminal charges against Kevin Spacey, 62, for four counts of sexual assault against three men,” Rosemary Ainslie, head of the CPS Special Crime Division told Variety.

She added, “He has also been charged with causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent. The charges follow a review of the evidence gathered by the Metropolitan Police in its investigation.

“The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against Mr Spacey are active and that he has the right to a fair trial.”

What were the other allegations?

Following the initial charges in 2019, Spacey was released from his role in House of Cards and the show’s executives filed a $31million arbitration claim in loss of profits as a result of the allegations against Spacey.

The show said they had already filmed half of the next season when the allegations against Spacey surfaced, a claim that he is continuing to fight as he filed a request in civil court, asking the judge to set aside the arbitration ruling.

Another charge against Spacey arose in 2018 for indecent assault in Nantucket Island, Massachusetts that involved a teenage boy. Spacey pleaded not guilty and the charge was later dropped after the alleged victim decided to withdraw the civil lawsuit.

The actor has also faced other complaints including from around 20 people he worked with while he was the artistic director at London’s Old Vic theatre from 2004 to 2015.

Spacey has continued to try to make a comeback in Hollywood despite the allegations against him, and in April 2022 two films he starred in, Peter Five Eight and Gateway to the West, were presented to the Cannes Film Festival.
