Emmy Rossum, who appeared in the US version of Shameless as Fiona Gallagher, has talked about losing out on the role of Susan Storm in 2015’s Fantastic Four.
The 2015 Fantastic Four reboot did not impress audiences. While the early 2000s take on Marvel’s First Family was met with a lukewarm reaction from audiences, Josh Trank’s darker reimagining of one of Marvel’s more upbeat comics was widely regarded as one of the worst superhero movies ever made.
Despite its poor reception, the film did boast a stellar cast, with the likes of Miles Teller and Michael B. Jordan amongst its lead actors. The role of Susan Storm, the Invisible Woman, was played by Kate Mara, but Shameless star Emmy Rossum had also auditioned for the part. She recently spoke about the experience of losing out on a superhero role.
In an interview with Josh Horowitz on his Happy Sad Confused podcast, Emmy Rossum talked about auditioning for the Invisible Woman in 2015’s Fantastic Four. Rossum revealed the devastation that came with losing out on a major Marvel role and admits she “didn’t understand the dialogue” – perhaps something that should have hinted the film was not going to resonate with audiences. She said:
“I did not get it. Devastated, utterly devastated. I remember where I was when I didn’t get it. I was with my now-husband on a beach somewhere and I got the call that I didn’t get it, and I was pretty sure I didn’t get it because I did not feel that the screen-test went well. I just didn’t hook into that character at all. I didn’t understand the dialogue, I couldn’t sell it, I was just like ‘I don’t know what to do with my lines, I can’t find my in here…’
“I think I did [want it]. There’s part of me that thinks that that kind of transformation, when it works, is really fun. When it is Iron Man, when it is those things that feel like, they feel really unique, I think it can really work.”
Emmy Rossum was probably better off not getting involved with Fantastic Four, given the film’s ultimate reputation. It sounds like the actress does have an interest in the challenges and opportunities presented by a superhero movie role though, so perhaps fans will get to see her appear in another Marvel movie somewhere down the line. Of course, Marvel Studios currently has a Fantastic Four reboot in the works, so maybe there’s still a chance for Emmy Rossum to take on the role of Susan Storm.
