George Miller reflected on his cancelled Justice League: Mortal film.
Years before the DC Extended Universe was launched, there were plans for Justice League: Mortal, a film to be directed by George Miller. Known for his films such as Lorenzo’s Oil, the Happy Feet movies, and the Mad Max film series, Miller was originally on track to bring the most iconic superhero team in DC Comics to life.
In an interview with Deadline, George Miller was promoting his new film, Three Thousand Years of Longing. he then reflected on part of his process in making films, and what he learned from not making the film:
“Yeah, for me it does because it has happened several times. I’ve been sacked off a film — that happened with Contact and I was very enthusiastic about that. Then, we were very keen to do Justice League back around that time, and there were already photographs and publicity out, and then that fell away. I’m not saying that’s what jinxed it, but I think it’s just better to finish the film and offer it to audiences; to let them take on the story or not.”
Given the overwhelming success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, many have compared the DC Extended Universe unfavorably to it, especially when it comes to cinematic team-up event projects. If George Miller’s Justice League: Mortal ended up getting made, it is possible that we would’ve seen the DC team hit theaters before Earth’s Mightiest Heroes would’ve assembled.
Here is the synopsis for Zack Snyder’s Justice League:
“In ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes. Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, DeSaad and Darkseid and their dreadful intentions.”
Both versions of Justice League are available to stream on HBO Max. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the future of the DC Universe, as well as George Miller’s upcoming films, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
